More WHO Antics--Roger Bate Reports

The American has an article by Roger Bate assessing current compulsory licensing trends at WHO:

The drug companies have tried voice: they have pointed out the need to make some profit from middle-income markets; they have complained to governments, activists, the media, and anyone that will listen; and they have tried litigation and threats of exit. Perhaps it is time to actually try exit.

The first to take action might be Novartis. According to several sources, the company has shelved plans to build a $500 million factory in Brazil that would manufacture an anti-meningitis vaccine.

"Perhaps it is time to actually try exit."

They can't exit the pharma market soon enough--they have done a phenomenally poor job of providing important medication. Witness the current lack of antibiotic or vaccine research at for profits--NFP's like St. Jude Children's Research hospital are far ahead in providing treatments that would actually improve health outcomes.

As Michael Perelman has far capably demonstrated in his book 'Steal this Idea: The Corporate Confiscation of Creativity' government programs have also done better in producing health outcomes that matter.

I can't wait to see for profit drug companies implode so research can be put back in the hands of the government and not for profits, where it belongs.
