The Proof is Easy

Last week Solveig considered frameworks with which to decide tailoring of copyright policy. Although copyright doctrine does not have the strict utilitarian underpinning of patent doctrine, copyright policy in the US has prominently focused on economic ends. Copyright policy must further creative productions that enrich our culture and drive economic activity. The alternative is goods such as Wikipedia, the free software movement, the free culture movement and bad art- stuff you have to give away for free (and sometimes thats not even possible). One need only to look at these train wrecks to see why society would benefit from strong copyright policies- we need to do better than what a weak copyright regime could offer.
