Microsoft appoints a new Linux interop guru: Tom Hanrahan, former director of engineering at the Linux Foundation--which was formed by the merger of the Open Source Development Labs and the Free Standards Group--will head up the Interoperability Lab and take the job title of director of Linux interoperability. Hanrahan is a Linux veteran, having overseen a large team of kernel developers in a former role at IBM's Linux Technology Center. With Microsoft's recent patent pacts with LG, Novell and Xandros, its easy to see why the firm would hire an interoperability specialist- to more effectively achieve interoperability with different parts of the technological community, and to deliver better solutions to consumers.
Patent licensing deals entail more than simply dropping patents off at the front door, they involve collaboration and knowledge-exchange between organizations, what the patent system is meant for.
