OpenLogic, Inc., a FOSS solutions firm, recently conducted a survey on GPL3. Obviously, the group has interests in the commercial and practical aspects of updating the GPL. So why are the survey results so confusing? 71% of respondents who currently use the GPL v2 said they would support moving projects they work with to the GPLv3 when the final draft comes out. With such faith (signing on with a license that’s not even completed yet), a surprisingly small percentage of survey respondents indicated positive outlooks when asked other questions on GPL3:o 50% of the respondents said that they believe GPLv3 is good for [FOSS]
o 29.5% are not sure
o 15.9% said they do not believe GPL v3 is good for open source. What?!
CNet provides some clarification on the lack of consensus on GPL3- there is none. Of the 45 people who responded (to the OpenLogic survey), 50% said they believed GPL 3 is good for the open-source programming movement. That's not a majority by any stretch of the imagination, but it's three times the 16% who said they believed GPL 3 wasn't good for open source. And 30% said they weren't sure. Perhaps some meaning will arise on Thursday, May 17 when Professor Eben Moglen gives a webinar on GPL3. I can't wait...
