Hacker Cool

This Vanity Fair article wallows in (with a few token paragraphs for balance) piracy is cool. Reminds me of elementary school kids daring each other to shoplift.*

This hacker/cracker, by contrast, really is cool.

*Disclaimer. This comparison is a mere allusion intended to invoke the mental state of the perpetrators, that is, a state in which doing is celebrated because what is forbidden can in fact be done with impunity, not because doing is in the least bit productive or helpful or constitutes any lasting achievement. It is not intended to constitute a claim, argument, warranty, or assertion to the effect that intellectual property or copyright or patents are exactly like physical property, or that illegal copying is exactly like the theft of physical property in every aspect, though its impact on incentive to create is, in general, likely to be similar.
