Optical computing... How does it work?

So at Telecosm there were quite a few discussions of optical networks and computing, leading us to wonder about the physics. How does light carry information, exactly (other than pulses on and off)? A couple articles I found helped. One from Technology Research News and another from Discover. It's all about spin.
