I recently attended a Sports Illustrated golf party, where I won a golf club by hitting a 50 foot putt. This should come in handy with the golf balls I bought at a charity auction several weeks ago.
In any case, golf equipment benefits from patent protection more than other sports, due to the complexity of club technology and aerodynamics (as explained from this NASA site) involved in designing golf balls. See a USPTO press release on golf patents shortly before the 2002 Masters in Augusta.
