IBM spokesman, Jan. 2005: "Our pledge today is the beginning of a new era in how IBM will manage intellectual property to benefit our partners and clients. Unlike the preceding Industrial Economy, the Innovation Economy requires that intellectual property be deployed for more than just providing the owner with freedom of action and income generation," Kelly said in a statement. WSJ, July 19, 2006: Big Blue's second-quarter results were helped by a 5% rise in software sales to $4.2 billion [$16.8 billion annualized], indicating one revenue bright spot. As frequently noted, we actually have no problem with the second of these personalities, the capitalist one. Our problem is with the first -- the one that characterizes a sensible business strategy (trying to commoditize the operating system so IBM can sell aps, hardware, and services) in terms of a religious crusade.
