The newly-formed Open Source Media reports on the World Summit on the Information Society meeting decisions on the supervision of the Internet:
An agreement was reached at Tuesday's UN-convened World Summit on the Information Society that will allow the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), a US non-profit corporation, will continue to oversee the governing of cyberspace for the time being (as per the Associated Press), despite pressure from international leaders who would like to see governance shift to the United Nations or a UN-like body. The issue will be taken up again in 2006. The agreement was reached after what the New York Times called "two years of fiery argument" between ICANN and delegates from 100 countries.
