Academic Relations Manager
Microsoft Corporation has an immediate opening for an
Academic Relations Manager in the Corporate and Regulatory
Affairs group of the Law and Corporate Affairs division,
based in Redmond, WA. Reporting to the Associate General
Counsel of the Regulatory Affairs and Public Policy group,
the Academic Relations Manager will partner with academic
institutions, think tanks and industry associations to help
generate breakthrough academic research in areas important
to Microsoft's policy and business goals.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Responsibilities include: Assisting existing staff in
building relationships directly with academic and other
researchers to support research and teaching efforts;
developing seminars, workshops, and faculty summits
exposing academics to the policy dimensions of Microsoft
technology and research; managing a research grant program;
staying abreast of academic research across a range of
technology and public policy topics including competition
in network industries and antitrust, intellectual property
rights, innovation and economic growth, network security
and digital privacy, and driving new academic research in
these areas; working with government affairs personnel,
antitrust, patent and copyright attorneys, in the U.S. and
abroad; creating partnerships with universities on public
policy issues including technology transfer and IPR
policies; partnering with Microsoft Research to enhance
overall management of the company's university relations
and to provide information on research trends in public
policy topics.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualifications include: J.D., LL.M., or PhD in economics,
law and economics or public policy and minimum of five
years experience in economics, public policy or a related
field; experience should include research in an applied
setting (a university, think tank, government agency or
private sector) in areas such as competition and antitrust,
IPR, innovation and economic growth, network security and
digital privacy. The successful candidate will be able to
engage at a sophisticated level with academics and advocate
viewpoints on these and other topics. Other requirements
include strong project management skills, a demonstrated
ability to work with loosely affiliated groups and
individuals; an appreciation for the academic research
process and understanding of how academic research plays a
strategic role in shaping government policy; ability to
understand a variety of technologies and to apply legal and
policy principles to evolving situations; working knowledge
of Microsoft products and services.
