In sharp contrast to Patrick's blog of a few days ago (Russia, Copyright, Patents and Inventions), we seem to be making an effort to educate our very young inventors about our patent system and the concept of intellectual property.
At Camp Invention, organized by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and co-sponsored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, young campers got a lecture from Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property Stephen Pinko. The campers, who spent the week participating in hands-on inventing and problem solving, listened to Pinko discuss intellectual property and, of course, the illegality of downloading copyrighted material. Pinko also asked the kids for their help in combating piracy.
Honestly, after a week of fun filled activies, Pinko's "DON'T STEAL" lecture was probably kind of a downer. Regardless, I think it's great to expose young kids to the big bad world of intellectual property theft. I would much prefer they have to sit through a lecture than deal with the depressing situation Patrick described in Russia.
