Software industry losses due to piracy increased $4 billion from 2003 to 2004, according to a new study released by the Business Software Alliance. BSA President Robert Holleyman said one out of every three software programs in use worldwide is pirated. Latin America, a favorite of some in the Free Culture Movement, has the highest piracy rate of any region. Holleyman praised BSA education efforts. "But the continued influx of new users in emerging markets, and the increased availability of pirated software primarily through the Internet and P2P networks," he said, "underscores that continued education is a must."
