Re Solveig's post that the pressure to open up code is forcing companies to rely more on patent protection -- it was indeed I who made this point in Milan, but it was not an original thought. I was echoing comments I have heard from people in the software business.
It is also worth noting that the bargain of disclosure in exchange for protection is one of the fundamental principles underlying the whole patent system, so this choice is not unique to software.
